With a dedicated and highly experienced staff team, many of whom have worked at the Centre for over 15 years, our guests recognise that this knowledge, combined with the unique natural environment of Heatree, provides the ultimate learning opportunity. Learning in this experiential way enables the development of key skills and behaviours, helping develop positive outcomes for individuals over the long term and teaching them how to value and respect the natural world and the people around them.
Each activity is designed to provide moments to challenge and improve self-confidence, to step out of routine thought and go beyond perceived limitations. There are opportunities to develop resilience, respect, trust and build relationships with others.
We run a wide variety of activity sessions both onsite and on Dartmoor, such as kayaking, climbing, raft building, mountain biking, bushcraft and archery – see our full list below. We also have a Bronze Age roundhouse on site which provides a unique and engaging learning experience in prehistory.
Outdoor education enables access to places and activities that need specialised knowledge or equipment, which can leave them to be experienced by only a small percentage of the population. We are committed to making outdoor education accessible to all, regardless of a young person’s life experiences, background or abilities. Our highly qualified and experienced team will adapt and tailor the activities to meet the needs of participants; facilitating individualised learning.
We are committed to making sure everyone feels included, and our all-terrain wheelchair enables physically disabled users or those with reduced mobility to explore and enjoy Dartmoor with the excitement and exhilaration of reaching places that were previously inaccessible for them.
Activity sessions need to be booked in advance; please speak to us as soon as possible if you wish to book. Our maximum group size for most activities is 12 people, and must include a group leader or teacher. We will advise you if this ratio is different for certain activities.
For school activity programmes or to book group activity sessions please speak to our Bookings Administrator on 01647 221307 or email: bookings@heatree.org
