Degree Programmes

Heatree has developed a nationally unique partnership with the University Centre South Devon which enables volunteers to stay at Heatree and study. Two courses are available: a two year Foundation Degree in Adventure Leadership, which can be topped up in one year to a full Bachelor’s (Hons) Degree in Coaching (Outdoor Leadership). Both are awarded by the University of Plymouth.

Students at Heatree receive:

  • Lectures at both South Devon University Centre and Heatree Activity Centre
  • Personal Tutor and access to Student Services support
  • Outdoor Adventure training days and expeditions
  • Study time and a dedicated study space with computer and library facilities
  • Personalised assignment support with one of our qualified teachers (several of the Heatree staff lecture as part of this degree)
  • Christian Leadership module
  • Food and on-site accommodation

Course Modules include:

  • Principles of adventure
  • Physiology of the outdoors
  • Business start-up
  • Expedition leadership
  • Psychology for the extremes
  • Applied adventure sports

To enrol on this course, you will require 48-60 UCAS points, from at least one of the following: A Levels, BTEC Nationals, Access to Higher Education Diploma, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualifications.

Study, lead and train

Students are volunteers at Heatree as part of the Outdoor Education Team. During their volunteer time they will also gain experience delivering outdoor learning and working towards and gaining national governing body outdoor qualifications including:

  • Climbing Wall Award
  • British Canoe Union Level 1 Coach
  • Lowland Leader Award
  • Adventure First Aid
  • Mountain Biking Trail Leader

Various other awards and qualifications are included in the scheme and gaining these will depend on your experience, personal interests and the requirements of the Centre.
